The greatest sights of Slovenia

Paradise under the Alps

For centuries, Bled with its Blejsko Jezero lake, home to the only island in Slovenia, has been treasured by those in search of truly unique beauty. The lake island with a church – its bell is believed to exert special powers when it comes to love – is accessible by “pletna” boats, a special type of traditional vessel. If you want the best possible view of the lake, its island and alpine peaks surrounding it, you should visit the castle which, perched atop a rock formation looming over the lake, is itself an amazing sight and rightfully considered one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Europe.

The wondrous underworld

With its magnificent speleothems and splendid biodiversity, the Postojnska Jama karstic cave is one of the most attractive caves in the whole world. To fully experience the mighty underworld paradise, which was created by millions of years of tiny droplets depositing limestone, make sure you take a ride on the cave train. You will be able to study the cave’s most precious jewels up close and meet the mysterious cave dwellers that are the closest thing to baby dragons anyone has ever seen. There is a certain eeriness to how the Postojna cave mirrors the landscape above, with its underground mountains, rivers and huge caverns. Always a challenge to researchers, the Postojna cave is one of the greatest sites of speleobiology in the world.

Primeval Beech Forests of Slovenia

UNESCO’s World Heritage Beech Forests of the Carpathian and other European regions are the best‑preserved beech forests, which has played an important role in the development and environmental impact of beech ecosystems in Europe since the last ice age 12,000 years ago. The forest reserves of Pragozd Krokar and Snežnik‑Ždrolce are among them. The Pragozd Krokar primeval forest is a wonderful piece of pristine nature in the heart of the Kočevje forest. Untouched by the human hand, it is home to indigenous carnivorans and birds. Ancient beech forests that earned their entry into the UNESCO world heritage list can also be seen in the Snežnik‑Ždrolce reserve. Both forest reserves are part of the Natura 2000 protected network.

Idrija and its mercury heritage

Together with the Spanish Almaden, Idrija is a world‑important heritage site for mercury mining. Known under the name Antonijev Rov, this mining shaft was dug in 1500 AD and it is one of the oldest preserved mine entrances in Europe. It is open for viewing and you can learn about the traditional ways of mining. Though be careful that the mine gnome doesn’t get you. The mining heritage and the lives of the former miners’ families have left their mark on many of Idrija’s sights, from its astonishing technological heritage, preserved in the Gewerkenegg castle museum, to the original lace‑making tradition of Idrija.

The home of the Lipizzaner horse

The stud farm to which the graceful yet powerful white Lipizzaner horse owes its origins, was established in 1580. It is in Lipica, located on the Karst Plateau (Kras). This is in fact the oldest European stud farm that has been breeding the same horse breed without interruption. It is a monument of cultural and historical significance that amazes visitors not only with its equestrian marvels and adventures but also with the unique karstic landscape surrounding it.

The secret of Mediterranean salt

Piran and its saltworks (known as Sečoveljske Soline), where salt and the treasured salt blossom continue to be produced in the traditional way, are a must‑see. The saltworks were the driving force behind the growth of Piran, the most beautiful city on the Slovenian coast. The picturesque medieval city, fully‑protected as a monument of cultural and historical importance, borders on two landscape parks, one of them home to the somewhat unexpected sight of the tallest cliff of the Adriatic sea.

The oldest vine in the world

The centre of Maribor, in Lent, is where the oldest grapevine in the world grows. It is over 400 years old and it is the only plant with its own museum, known as Hiša Stare Trte. In Maribor, several public celebrations (Rez Stare Trte, Martinovanje and the Festival Stare Trte) are dedicated to this very special vine. And, believe it or not, the vine has its own anthem, which the people of Maribor are happy to sing.
